Slovak fairytale blown by a kick, U20 narrowly fell to Canada

What a story this could've been if only Slovakia could keep themselves calm. It all started great for their U20 team when Andrej Siakeľ opened the scoresheet in the first period. Although the Canadians tied the game just after the first intermission, Tim Danielčák once again heated his teammates up. All hopes abruptly fell into shambles though, in a scrimmage in front of the Canadian goal, Ján Šatka kicked Wylie Birkett in the groin and was sent out of the game. What was supposed to be a two-minute power-play turned essentially into three minutes of short-handed play, and the North Americans immediately netted two goals to secure a comfortable lead, which later crystalized into a 4-3 victory, though much more dramatic than what Canada U20 would've hoped for.

COACHES´ REACTIONS

Milan Vozár (Assistant Coach, SVK): „Of course, we are not satisfied. We lost by one goal, 3-4. Essentially, it was our first match in the tournament, and we got to know the tournament and our opponent, what we can afford, what we can expect. I believe that we will improve in the upcoming matches and secure a better position in the standings for the playoffs."

Paul Kastes (CAN): „It was a lot better than our first game. I think we came together a little bit better in this one, we were a little bit more organized, we executed better. I liked the effort a lot better too, we did the little things and played really good today. Their goalie played well otherwise we could have a couple more goals too. It’s a step in the right direction because we weren’t happy with our first game so we are happy now.“
