North American derby had to be decided in shoot-out, Canada U20 grabs first two points

What an opening game for the Canadian and American U20s! Both teams went into the game full-on and one could almost barely keep up with the pace. The Americans got into a 2-0 lead thanks to Michael Henry and Roman Rennebeck. Despite a not-ideal start, the Canadians got their feet running soon after, and were able to magnificently come back as they scored three times within eleven minutes! Ben Fontaine, Owen Weihs, and Jaden Dyke all got one goal apiece. Tristan Hofstrom's equalizer just before the end of the second period changed the pace of the game as it transitioned more into a tactical, yet no less physical and fast, battle. Both teams were sweating blood which resulted in the score staying three-all even after a five-minute overtime. The North American derby had to be decided in the shoot-out in which the Canadians grasped the bonus point.

COACHES´ REACTIONS

William Brasko (USA): "This tournament hadn't been played in five years, so we had high expectations but little idea of the form of the other teams. Today we sent a clear message to the others: we are here and we will play to win. I'm very proud of the boys for their commitment. We took Canada to the shootout, that's nothing to worry about.“

Paul Kastes (CAN): "The first match was challenging. There were many aspects in our game that we didn't like. We prepared well, but we are still gaining our first experiences in the tournament. We started by playing against the USA, and there is always a great rivalry between us. We'll take the win, but we can't be satisfied with the performance we showed.“
