30th June 2023 - Štěpán Navrátil

The Swiss fought bravely but ultimately were no match to Canada U20

It only took Reegan Hiscock four minutes to open the scoresheet, but the Swiss quickly equalized thanks to Nick Huber's rebound goal. In the twelfth minute, however, Rawji and Janus scored two back-to-back goals and gave Canada a two-goal lead. From that point on, it was mostly a one-sided game. Hiscock and Rawji notched their second goals, and captain Connor Roulette joined them on the scoresheet later. Ben Fontaine and Evan Friesen also contributed as Canada scored seven goals in the second period alone with Hiscock completing the hat trick after the intermission. After his goal, the Swiss made a goalie change as 19-year-old Anja Tschirren took her place between the pipes. During the nine minutes in the net, she only conceded once and made numerous brilliant saves. In the end, Switzerland suffered a 1-12 loss despite a brave effort.

COACHES´ REACTIONS

Tobias Strahm (SUI): ‚‚We had a very tough start, conceding the first goal. However, an opportunity for a power play presented itself, during which we scored our first goal of the tournament, which is a tremendous achievement for us.‘‘

Paul Kastes (CAN): ) ‚‚I didn't like our first period very much; we lacked discipline, which also led to Switzerland's first goal. However, our game settled down after the first period, and I really enjoyed how we played in the second and third fifteen-minute intervals. There were many positive aspects to our performance, and although the score isn't the most important thing, it worked in our favor as well. Finally, I would like to commend the Swiss goaltender wearing number 44, who made several fantastic saves towards the end of the match.‘‘
